SLEEP STUDIES
Sleep studies are extremely important to you and your health as they can help diagnose sleep disorders. When left untreated, sleep disorders can pose serious health risks.
HOME-BASED PORTABLE MONITOR
Home-based Portable Monitor – There are instances where your doctor may recommend a sleep study using a home-based portable monitor. This type of test normally measures the same types of information as the PSG including:
-
Oxygen levels in the blood
-
Heart rate
-
Amount of air flow through the nose and mouth
-
Chest and belly movements as you sleep
The results of the home monitoring may be used by a sleep specialist to determine a diagnosis of sleep apnea or to find out how treatment for sleep apnea is working. You will have to check with your doctor if this type of home-based sleep study will work for you. If you get this type of test, you will be responsible for picking up the equipment and learning how to use it. In some cases, a technician will be able to go to your home to help you set up the equipment and prepare for the sleep study. Once you’re done with the at-home study, you’ll have to return the equipment to the clinic. If your home-based monitor did not record enough information, you may have to repeat the test or have a PSG done instead.
